Frequently Asked Questions
Got Questions? Below are answers to common questions. However, no two cases are the exactly alike, so please reach out for specific answers relevant your case.
How much will your services cost?
A top question when engaging an expert witness is, "How much will it cost?"
The short answer is, it depends on the needs of your case.
Every case is different. You may only have one short video - however it may require complex tasks, or you may have hours of video requiring simple tasks. As such, cost becomes a balance of effort and quantity and may often be more affordable than you might expect.
If the work is defined and doesn't change, we can provide estimates before work is done. Some cases are more fluid and are priced based on hourly rates for on specific tasks. Our years of experience aid in providing estimate that you can rely on.
Someone tampered with this video! Can you help me?
We have several tools and processes to evaluate file provenance and/or the presence of AI. However, sometimes what people think is tampering, may simply be artifacts of the encoding process used in creating highly compressed security files.
We evaluate with an open mind: Reviewing technical aspects such as block level structure, metadata, and AI detection; We also examine visual qualities of video to evaluate for anomalies often found in AI generated content.
Do I get a report with your work?
We often start with verbal reports to determine the full scope of what is needed and if there is a cause to move forward with a detailed report.
Written Reports are typically required with the final delivery along with derivative files intended for evidentiary use. They provide legal required documnetation of our work. These written reports also aid us in evaluating other expert opinions.
Our report explains the scientific basis for the work we perform, so the tiers of fact can have confidence in the findings. A thorough report is imperative to help protect everyone at trial and on appeal.
How do I get you files? Can I email?
Occasionally email can be used, but digital media is often too large. File size is limited and some email server may compress the file (which we want to avoid).
We prefer to have an online repository such is Box, Dropbox, WeTransfer, or your file sharing service of choice. We offer a file upload (Box.com) for delivering large files with a simple drag and drop - but prefer to allign with what ever service you have, especially if other collaborators are already using it.
Case with lots of cameras and hours of footage are best delivered on a hard drive, using FedEx or UPS tracked delivery. A good rule of thumb is what ever method you received the file, may be the proper way to get them to me. Provided the data was collected, archived, and delivered to you properly.
If you are unsure, please reach out and we will work with you on the best method of delivery for your case.
I have screen recordings on the videos, is that good?
We always want to work with the originals, when ever they are available. Working with screen recordings or other derivatives will eliminate pertinent metadata and file characteristics that are often imperative to file evaluation and authentication.
That said, depending on the questions being asked, of us and of the case in general, screen captures and other derivatives may be acceptable - if it is "Best Evidence." But if the non-originals change certain parameters, even under the best evidence rules, it may not aid in answering questions in your case. Distortions, Encoding Artifacts, Bitrates, Framerate, and NEW metadata are now "baked-in" to the file and can hinder a comprehensive review.
When in doubt... When they exist... When you want an in-depth review...

What is Camera Synchronization?
Multiple security cameras from one or more buildings? Store or Traffic cameras with overlapping perspectives?
Cameras sync'd into one view helps track movements. It can help track subjects to alternate cameras which may beter help to identify clothing or other items such a cars and license plates. This process has led to alternate suspects and additional witnesses.
Dash Cams, Body Cams, Security Videos... when synchronized, can paint a clearer picture of the larger scene, and can provide detailed timings and movement maps that help investigators and triers of fact understand complex scenes with lots of overlapping data.
Sound simple? What if every camera has different time offsets, framerates, bitrates, start and end times, time gaps... It gets complicated fast! We have experience sorting all of this into one comprehensive view.
Do you give testimony on your work?
Yes, we have been testifying in cases since 2009.
Testimony is typically required if you want to use any demonstratives in court.
You will need our testimony to admit the evidence and explain the scientific backing of the digital media technologies and forensic processes used. We have experience testifying about our work, explaining advanced precesses, and backing up our findings in court.
The good news is, we embrace this as an opportunity to educate the triers of fact and allow the lawyers to focus the jury on vital information that the evidence reveals.
